
India’s coconut sector is undergoing a significant transformation, supported by government initiatives, sustainable farming practices, productivity improvement and value addition. Known as the “Tree of Life”, coconut has long been an important part of India’s agricultural economy, rural livelihoods, food traditions and cultural heritage. Today, it is increasingly becoming a diversified, export-oriented industry with opportunities across cultivation, processing, manufacturing and entrepreneurship.
India has emerged as a leading player in the global coconut economy. The country ranks first in coconut production and third in cultivation area worldwide. India contributes around 31.24% of global coconut production and accounts for nearly 17.90% of global cultivation area. During 2024–25, the country produced approximately 20,301 million coconut nuts from around 2.19 million hectares of cultivated land.
Coconut production is distributed across several states, with important differences in area, production and productivity. Kerala has the largest area under coconut cultivation, while Tamil Nadu leads in total production. Andhra Pradesh records the highest productivity, followed by West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. These regional differences highlight the importance of scientific plantation management, improved planting material, irrigation and sustainable agricultural practices.
The economic importance of coconut is also increasing because of the expansion of value-added products and exports. India’s coconut product exports reached around ₹7,038 crore in 2025–26, showing strong growth compared with the previous year. Traditionally, India exported products such as coconut oil, copra, desiccated coconut and coconut shell charcoal. The export basket is now becoming more diversified with products including virgin coconut oil, coconut milk, coconut water and activated carbon.
Indian coconut products are finding markets in Europe, America, Australia and several Asian countries. Major destinations include the United States, United Arab Emirates, Germany, Russia, Belgium and the United Kingdom. This diversification creates opportunities for farmers, processors, exporters and rural enterprises while helping India capture greater value from every coconut produced.
Government support remains central to strengthening the sector. The Coconut Development Board, established on 12 January 1981 under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, works towards the integrated development of coconut cultivation and related activities in India. Headquartered in Kochi, the Board promotes production and productivity, quality planting material, processing, value addition, market development, technology adoption and export promotion.
Another important support mechanism is the Minimum Support Price system for copra. Copra is the dried kernel of coconut and is covered under the agricultural commodities receiving MSP support. The policy aims to provide remunerative prices to farmers and reduce the risks associated with price fluctuations. Milling copra is mainly used for coconut oil extraction, while ball copra is generally used as edible copra and for religious purposes.
Improving the availability of quality planting material is another important priority. Government programmes support seed gardens, nurseries, certification systems and demonstration farms. The Coconut Development Board establishes Demonstration cum Seed Production Farms to promote scientific cultivation and provide farmers with improved planting material and practical knowledge.
Expansion of coconut cultivation is also encouraged in suitable regions through financial assistance and technical support. During 2025–26, new coconut cultivation areas were developed across states including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Assam. Such expansion needs to be combined with appropriate agro-climatic planning and efficient resource management.
Productivity improvement is equally important because ageing plantations, pest attacks, diseases and inadequate management can reduce yields. The Productivity Improvement Through Coconut-Based Cropping System promotes integrated farming systems, better irrigation, organic farming, mechanisation and scientific plantation management. These approaches can improve productivity while supporting soil health, resource efficiency and long-term farm sustainability.
Replanting and rejuvenation programmes focus on replacing diseased, old, unproductive and low-yielding coconut palms. Removing unhealthy trees and introducing improved varieties can restore plantation productivity and improve the health of coconut gardens. Such measures are particularly important for maintaining production in established coconut-growing regions.
The Coconut Promotion Scheme announced in the Union Budget 2026–27 adds another dimension to sectoral development. Its objectives include improving productivity, strengthening integrated crop health management, supporting value-added processing units and enhancing exports. By promoting modernisation across the coconut ecosystem, the scheme seeks to improve farmer incomes and strengthen India’s position in global markets.
Skill development and entrepreneurship are also becoming important components of the coconut economy. The Coconut Development Board conducts training programmes related to scientific cultivation, harvesting, processing and enterprise development. Initiatives such as Kera Kaushal Kendra encourage rural entrepreneurship and help create opportunities for coconut-based micro-enterprises.
Overall, India’s coconut sector represents the intersection of agriculture, rural employment, food processing, exports, sustainability and entrepreneurship. The future of the sector depends not only on increasing production but also on improving productivity, reducing crop losses, strengthening processing capacity and creating stronger domestic and international markets.
